Sonali Bendre ruled the silver screen in the ’90s with her stellar performances and timeless charm. While that era may be behind us, her grace remains as captivating as ever. In a recent episode of Sunday Brunch, our Editor-in-Chief, Kamiya Jani, sat down with the actor over a delicious seafood spread for an engaging conversation about food, family, and more.
Maharashtrian Or Punjabi–What’s Cooked More At Sonali’s Home?
While waiting for a delicious seafood feast at Gajalee, Kamiya asked Sonali Bendre, a Maharashtrian married to filmmaker Goldie Behl, who is a Punjabi, which cuisine dominates her home. Without missing a beat, Sonali replied, “Punjabi!”
She shared that while Sundays at her mother’s home are still all about Maharashtrian favourites like mutton vade and bombil fry, weekends at her own home feature a hearty Punjabi spread. Think Punjabi kadhi, baingan ki kachri, aloo sabzi, rajma chawal, bhindi aloo, chole puri, served with achar, papad, and raita.
Fun ‘This Or That’ Game With Sonali Bendre
We also played a fun food-themed “This or That” game with Sonali Bendre, where at a lot of places she had to choose between Punjabi and Maharashtrian dishes. When Kamiya asked, “Are you more Punjabi than Maharashtrian now?” her choices throughout the game revealed the answer.
We kicked things off with a tough one—varan bhaat or rajma chawal. Sonali laughed and called it an “unfair” way to start. While she initially tried to stay diplomatic, she eventually picked rajma chawal, setting the tone for the rest of the game.
Next up, she chose butter pav bhaji over butter chicken, followed by puran poli over chole bhature. Between solkadhi and lassi, she opted for lassi, while misal pav beat chole kulche.
She also picked poha over upma and makki ki roti over thalipeeth. However, when it came to choosing between ukadiche modak and gajar ka halwa, Sonali simply couldn’t pick a favourite, saying she loved both equally.
