“I Am Human,” Shilpa Shetty On Dealing With Negativity, Nazar And Living In The Spotlight

Shilpa Shetty

When you’re a celebrity as prominent as Shilpa Shetty, you’re in the spotlight 24/7. Every move is scrutinised, and even the smallest news or comment can be amplified and blown out of proportion. But after spending decades in the film industry and building her presence in the business world, has the actress-restaurateur become immune to it all? Here’s what she has to say…

Shilpa Shetty On Coping With Negativity & Living In The Spotlight

On the latest episode of Stories From Bharat, Shilpa Shetty spoke candidly about how negativity impacts her businesses, the pressures of living in the public eye, and what it’s like to own one of Mumbai’s most celebrated restaurants. During the conversation, Kamiya Jani asked Shilpa and restaurateur Ranjit Bindra whether it bothers them when comments or news are blown out of proportion simply because they are public figures.

Responding to this, Ranjit admitted that it does affect them, “It does, we have been in the news for the past six months…there is something new every month!”

“It’s sad. I think we’ve always stood our ground. As a company and as individuals, we’re known for our integrity. As you asked earlier, does it hurt, and how do you deal with it? I am human. There are many times I sit and wonder why people don’t talk about the good things. Why is it that they focus only on the negatives? But as a celebrity, the unfortunate part is that my name has become clickbait. So, I’ve learned to take it in my stride,” Shilpa Shetty explained calmly.

On Nazar & Bastian’s Success

“But people are very smart, Kamiya. They know how to separate right from wrong. We’re still thriving, we’re still working, and the brand is working because it connects with people and gives them what they want,” she continued.

Recalling a specific incident, she added, “There were rumours that Bastian was shutting down, and I had to go on social media to clarify it, which is something I never do. I believe as a celebrity, you should never complain, never explain. But this time, it wasn’t about me; it was about the brand we’ve built with so much love, passion and effort. I didn’t want to respond, but I had to. And honestly, the kind of PR Bastian received at that time? We probably couldn’t have got that otherwise,” she concluded with a laugh.

From her belief in 11:11 to her deep-rooted spirituality, Shilpa Shetty also admitted that she believes in nazar. “There is something called ‘nazar’, we’re always talking about it. When you’re constantly being discussed and talked about…it’s such a competitive field, and unfortunately, people can go to any lengths,” she said, reflecting on the pressures that come with being in the spotlight.
