Pratap Sarnaik Talks About His Humble Beginnings
Over authentic Agri Thali, Maharashtra’s Transport Minister, Pratap Sarnaik, ran Kamiya Jani through a day in his busy life. The transport minister gave a rare inside tour of the grand farmhouse in Thane, where Bollywood celebrities frequent. Later, he even gave a tour of the Balasaheb Thackeray Art Gallery.
Pratap Sarnaik also opened up about his early struggles in his life and shared the pressures of being a politician. The minister spoke about the time when his father lost his job. Having to take care of three children and a wife who was a teacher, the family needed to contribute to running the household. In a 40 sq ft home, a family of five people lived. That’s when his father asked his children to help contribute to the family’s finances.

He Sold Agarbattis, Ran An Anda Bhurji Cart
At the age of just 9 years, Pratap Sarnaik started selling agarbattis and calendars. He would earn about ₹30 in a day, with each calendar selling for 30 paise. Later, Sarnaik started working as an auto rickshaw driver and would make upto ₹100 in a day. The hustler had a fire in his belly to increase his earnings.
So, he developed a handcart and took a loan of ₹5000 from the central bank. On that handcart, he cooked Anda Bhurji, omelette, and would sell the staples to hungry customers. Later, he met his wife, and the couple prepared mutton curry and bhakri, a satiating meal to feed customers.
