Our Editor-in-Chief, Kamiya Jani, enjoyed a delicious Sunday Brunch at Pallavi Joshi and Vivek Agnihotri’s beautiful home in Mumbai. The trio spoke about food, diet, and of course, movies! Keeping Vivek’s intense filmography in mind, Kamiya asked the couple if they are ever cautious about choosing subjects that may invite trouble. To this, Pallavi replied that Vivek doesn’t set out to stir controversy; rather, the subjects he chooses naturally become controversial.
A Lot Goes Behind Pallavi Joshi & Vivek Agnihotri’s Movies
“Vivek has a very deep understanding of life, in general. The reason why I have never stopped him from following his path is that I know he is not doing this to stir up a controversy, which happens because of the kind of subjects they are. The reason he makes these films is because he is so influenced by our culture, and he wants to contribute to the culture of India,” Pallavi Joshi opens up about how Vivek Agnihotri plans his movies.
“Aisa nahi hai ki humne soch liya ki Kashmir pe film banaege and koi controversy dimag main aaye aur humne bana di. We have gone through four years of research. Maine ek-ek family ko jaake interview kiya hai, I have seen their pain, lived through it. After every interview, we used to cry, and we used to do 4-5 interviews daily, uske baas raat main neend nahi aati thi. You get so wound up in the pain and horrors of what people went through,” she further elaborated.

How Pallavi Influences Vivek
While Pallavi Joshi says she “wouldn’t even dream of influencing” Vivek Agnihotri in any way, the director feels otherwise. “I don’t think she remembers, but there was a time when I was very frustrated with the typical Bollywood-style star-based system, and I had no escape. We were talking, and I asked her what I should do. She didn’t tell me exactly what, but she did tell me as a filmmaker, you have two choices–you can be a very successful director, or you can be a director with a lot of credibility–you have to choose one. At that very moment, I knew what I had to do,” he fondly remembered.
“Bahut influence karti hai yeah mujhe, main yeah satvik isske karan hi bana hun. I tell her, I have to impress you all the time,” Vivek jokingly adds.
