If you didn’t know, a tropical storm is currently forming over the Bay of Bengal. Named Cyclone Montha, it is expected to make landfall along India’s east coast on October 28. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has now issued fresh rain alerts for several states along the eastern and southeastern coasts. Here are all the latest updates.

Cyclone Montha To Make Landfall On October 28

The India Meteorological Department has issued heavy rain alerts for states along India’s east and southeast coasts. As per a report by Hindustan Times, the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal intensified into a cyclonic storm on Sunday. The storm, named Montha, is now expected to strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm by October 28. Reports suggest the cyclone is moving closer to the coast. As per a report by India Today, Cyclone Montha is likely to make landfall between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam near Kakinada. An X user, @navin_ankampali, posted a video showing the rough sea conditions near Antharvedi beach of Konaseema district. 

Following its movement, the IMD has warned of heavy rainfall in parts of Odisha, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh. By tomorrow, October 28, the department predicts the cyclone will intensify further. This development has prompted nearby states to activate emergency and disaster management measures.

People Urged To Remain Indoors

According to a report by India Today, maximum sustained wind speeds are expected to reach 90-100 km/h, with gusts up to 110 km/h. Along with heavy rain, high sea waves are expected along the coastline. Schools have been closed in Andhra Pradesh. A two-day holiday has been announced in Visakhapatnam, Anakapalle, and West Godavari districts. An orange alert has also been issued for several Tamil Nadu districts, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, and Ranipet, as the storm moves closer.

You might like to know that the name Montha was given by Thailand and means “beautiful flower” in Thai. With heavy rain warnings now in place and the cyclone expected to make landfall soon, authorities have urged people to stay indoors and follow official weather advisories.
