Several states are on alert as Cyclone Montha has intensified into a ‘severe’ cyclonic storm. It is set to make landfall today, with heavy rainfall expected in Andhra Pradesh. Parts of Tamil Nadu and Odisha have also been placed on high alert. Here are all the latest updates you should know.

Cyclone Montha to Make Landfall In Andhra Pradesh


Cyclone Montha, which earlier brought strong winds and dark skies, has now strengthened further and turned ‘severe’. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclone is expected to hit the coastal regions of Andhra Pradesh this evening. However, as per a report by India TV, the landfall could take place later in the night. Cyclone Montha may cross the coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. Most districts in the state can expect not just strong winds but extremely heavy rainfall. The cyclone will make landfall before moving inland towards southern Odisha. An X user, @IndiaWeather12, also posted the latest updates on Cyclone Montha. 

As per a report by Odishatv.in, Odisha is already prepared to face the impact. Five teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed at Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Kandhamal, and Rayagada. These districts are likely to be hit by the cyclone. These teams are equipped with power boats, rubber boats, JCBs, chainsaws, and telescopic lights. Reportedly, schools and other educational centres in several districts have been closed until October 30 as a safety measure.

Safety Guidelines To Stay Safe 

As Andhra Pradesh and Odisha remain on alert, here are some safety tips you can follow to stay safe: 

Do’s:

  • Keep windows and doors shut during the strong winds.
  • Switch off the electrical supply and main gas to avoid short circuits and accidental gas leaks.
  • Keep emergency supplies like extra batteries, non-perishable food, and battery-powered torches handy.
  • Stay informed on the weather updates through official and trusted news sources.
  • Stay indoors before and during Cyclone Montha.

Dont’s:

  • Do not drive through flooded roads, and make sure you avoid roads with fallen trees.
  • Do not use elevators in the buildings during the cyclone.
  • Don’t touch loose or dangling wires.
  • Avoid entering damaged buildings before or during the cyclone.
  • Lastly, do not panic and follow all the instructions issued by the authorities.

Why It’s Called ‘Cyclone Montha’

It’s a well-known fact that naming disasters like cyclones, typhoons, and tornadoes helps authorities track them globally. You might be curious to know why this cyclone is called Montha. According to India TV, the name means ‘beautiful flower’ in Thai and was given by Thailand. It was added to the list of tropical cyclone names used in the North Indian Ocean. This list is part of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) system for naming storms in the region.
