Mumbai’s Ganpati Visarjan turned tragic on Sunday, September 7, when a fatal electrocution incident claimed the life of one devotee and left five others hospitalised in the Sakinaka area, Financial Express reported. The incident took place on Khairani Road at approximately 10:45 a.m., when a massive crowd had gathered to celebrate Ganpati Visarjan. Sadly, 36-year-old Binu Sukumaran Kumaran was declared dead on arrival at Seven Hills Hospital. Every year, thousands of devotees come to Mumbai to celebrate Ganpati Visarjan, one of the city’s most magnificent celebrations. Devotees carry the beloved Lord Ganesha through the streets before the idol is immersed in the Arabian Sea at places like Chowpatty, Juhu, and Versova. Every year, communities and families come together to bid farewell to their beloved Bappa.

But in the midst of the festivities, safety can be overlooked, as this incident has shown. One unnoticed loose electrical wire caused unimaginable damage. For Binu Sukumaran’s family, the festivities have become a time of grief. Unfortunately, this incident makes us reevaluate how important it is to conduct proper safety checks at such large-scale events.

Sakinaka’s tragic event serves as a reminder that safety and happiness must coexist.
