A video posted by X user @MukeshVMakhija is going viral for all the right reasons. In the video, a Mumbai local train en route from Thane to Kalyan is so overcrowded that passengers can be seen hanging out of the open doors. The bigger question is: why was the train being operated with its doors open? It’s absolutely dangerous.
As per a report by Free Press Journal, the overcrowding occurred due to a sudden flash strike by railway employees. The strike was triggered after an FIR was registered against two railway engineers in connection with the June 9 Mumbra train accident, which led to several deaths and injuries. The strike caused massive disruptions in services, resulting in overcrowded trains and platforms.
Netizens Raise Questions Over Passenger Safety
The viral video, posted yesterday, drew heavy criticism online. One user commented, “The train should not move an inch if the doors are closed.” Another wrote, “WOW! Amazing infrastructure and quality of life in this city,” while one more highlighted the issue of overcrowding and said, “people please take action on this type of overcrowding because it’s very dangerous for people.”
Another X user questioned passenger safety, saying, “Absolutely ridiculous! It’s totally unsafe. It is very wrong of the motorman to start the train without ensuring that all doors are closed. Unlike ordinary local trains, these AC locals do not have the centre rod and door grip which people usually use in the non-AC train.”
