When Will Eid-ul-Fitr Be Celebrated In India This Year, March 19 Or March 20? Here’s What We Know

One of the most important festivals, Eid-ul-Fitr, is just around the corner. People are already excited and have started preparations, from shopping for new clothes to getting into the festive mood. But there’s one big question: when exactly is Eid-ul-Fitr? March 19 or March 20? Scroll down to find out!

What Is Eid-ul-Fitr?

Eid-ul-Fitr is one of the most important Muslim festivals. This day marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan. Muslims celebrate it on the first day of Shawwal, the tenth month of the Islamic Hijri calendar. On this day, people begin the celebration by offering special morning prayers. Families gather, share festive meals, and spend time with loved ones.

However, the exact date of Eid is not the same every year. It keeps changing. Why? As per Mint, this happens because the Islamic calendar follows the lunar cycle. The festival depends on the sighting of the Shawwal crescent moon, which signals the end of Ramadan.

To help reduce confusion this year, the Al Khatim Astronomical Observatory in the UAE released two images. These visuals show the expected visibility of the Shawwal crescent moon.

When Is Eid-ul-Fitr In India?

According to the centre, the crescent moon may be visible on March 18. This date will correspond to the 29th day of Ramadan in countries that started fasting on February 18.

According to Mint, in those countries, Eid-ul-Fitr is likely to be celebrated on March 19. This includes nations such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, where Ramadan began on February 18 after the crescent moon was spotted on February 17.

In places like India, Ramadan started on February 19. If the moon appears on March 19 in these regions, Muslims in India will celebrate Eid al-Fitr on March 20. The final decision will depend on the official moon-sighting announcements by local committees.
