During the event in Chennai, Dhanush revealed how the idea of making Idli Kadai came to his mind. He revealed that a few years ago, he had gone abroad with his manager Shreyas and director Ashwath Marimuthu for a meeting. To pass some time, he listened to Ilaiyaraaja’s music, something he often does when he is alone. One song in particular, ‘Naan Erikaarai’, made him nostalgic. He further added that some songs can take us back into the past, reported IANS Live.

He went on to share the song Naan Erikaarai took him back to the days when his mother would take him to her native village for summer holidays. He was around eight years old and would spend two to three months there. The village was small, with only two buses coming in and going out every day. There was one shop in particular that would often catch his attention—an idli shop.

Dhanush loved idlis, but he didn’t have money to buy them every day back then. For this, he, along with his sisters and cousins, used to wake up at 4 AM. They used to pluck flowers from the fields, and the owners used to pay them on the basis of the flowers they collected. After working for over two-and-a-half hours, each child would get two rupees, and with this money, they used to buy idlis. He recalled they used to get four to five idlis each.
