Mumbai’s popular Gallops restaurant at the Mahalaxmi Racecourse has landed in trouble after a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) inspection found several food safety and hygiene violations at the iconic eatery. Among the most concerning findings were blood and ketchup stains from non-vegetarian food found on ice stored inside a refrigerator.
Gallops Mumbai Loses Licence
According to Hindustan Times, the Maharashtra FDA has suspended the restaurant’s food licence with immediate effect after an inspection as part of its special festive-season food safety drive. During the inspection, the officials found live cockroaches and ants in the kitchen, along with water stagnation and grease accumulation.
According to the FDA, ice kept inside a refrigerator at Gallops had blood and ketchup stains from non-vegetarian food items. Inspectors also found raw materials stored in torn or damaged packaging, deteriorated walls, inadequately covered drainage and cockroach traps, and water stagnation in parts of the premises.
The inspection further revealed live cockroaches and ants in the kitchen. The restaurant was also found to have no records of annual medical examinations and vaccinations of its food handlers, with the FDA citing continued violations under Schedule 4 of the food safety regulations.

Deepika Padukone Hosted Fan Meet At The Iconic Restaurant
Gallops has been a familiar name on Mumbai’s dining scene for decades. Located inside the Royal Western India Turf Club at Mahalaxmi Racecourse, the restaurant recently marked 40 years at the venue. It opened in 1986 and has long been known for its racecourse setting and longstanding menu.
The restaurant has also had its share of celebrity moments. In December 2025, Bollywood actor Deepika Padukone hosted a birthday fan meet at Gallops, bringing together her fans for the special celebration.

The FDA’s action is part of a wider festive-season inspection drive in Maharashtra, during which action was also taken against several other food establishments over alleged hygiene and licensing violations.
