Mumbai universities are famous among people. But if you think only education is the reason for their popularity, then you’re wrong! Street food culture in Mumbai has always been at its peak, and who better than college students to prove that to you? One such famous spot among students is Mithibai College in Mumbai, and the Khau Galli (food street) in front of it. It was where people waited after lectures, celebrated tiny wins, got through heartbreaks, skipped classes and somehow spent money they definitely did not have at food stalls.

Meal Down Memory Lane For Alumni & Regulars At Mithibai College Khau Galli

Unfortunately, after nearly serving for 50 years, Mithibai Khau Galli has shut down, leaving a lot of former students and regulars realising how much of their college life was tied to that one stretch. Honestly, for many Mumbaikars, it feels weird even imagining the area without the usual noise, crowds and smell of butter, cheese and coffee wafting around.

Some people grew up there, but many practically survived college there.

“Every Friendship Started Over Food”

Ask anyone who studied around Vile Parle, and they probably have at least one Khau Galli story ready.

For Hrishikesh Hagwane, the memories instantly go back to late-night hangouts over Ferrero Rocher milkshakes with friends after lectures.

It was never planned,” he says. “Somebody would randomly ask about going to Khau Galli, and before we knew it, ten people would have assembled.

The charm of the place needed no specific occasion to visit. Also, almost every student had a “usual” order they defended like a family tradition.

Cold Coffee, Dosas And That Famous Cheese Vada Pav

For Renisa Shah, Chaibucks was a fixed stop. Especially the classic cold coffee and Nutella coffee.

But she also remembers the jini dosa from Anand Stall, which somehow became comfort food for half the area.

“That dosa after college was the favourite part,” she said.

Meanwhile, Dhriti Shah still cannot stop talking about Anand’s cheese vada pav. Which, honestly, became iconic long before food reels and influencers made everything viral online.

The thing with Mithibai Khau Galli was that the food wasn’t fancy or gourmet. But people loved it because it became part of their routine. Some stalls practically watched students grow up and visit even after college finished for them.

Bunking Lectures Meant Ending Up At RK Fast Food

For Neel Jani, Khau Galli memories are directly connected to bunking college lectures.

Specifically at RK Fast Food.

The wafer frankie was mandatory,” he says. “It’s like half the college attendance shortfall happened there.” Additionally, he said that whenever he was in the vicinity of Vile Parle, he would find a reason to go there.

And to be honest, that perfectly captures the lane.

It was chaotic, crowded, loud and sometimes impossible to even walk through properly. But people still kept going back.

Because food spots like these become emotional very fast in Mumbai.

Some People Remember The Drinks More Than The Food

Not everybody went there for cheesy snacks.

Sarah Gadhvi remembers standing outside Sai Juice Centre with friends, ordering the Ganga Jamuna juice after classes.

Nobody really knew why the combination worked so well, but it just did.

Yashvi Jain recalls, “Gayatri’s sandwiches and frankies were the main reason to show up after college hours

Sometimes, entire friend groups would stand there for hours doing absolutely nothing important. But somehow those evenings carried more memories than people carried into adulthood.

Mithibai Khau Galli: More Than Just A Food Lane

The closure of Mithibai Khau Galli is not only about losing food stalls.

For many former students from colleges nearby, it feels like a part of Mumbai youth culture quietly disappearing. Places like this cannot really be recreated inside polished food courts or modern cafés. The plastic stools, crowded counters, random conversations and oily paper plates were the whole point.

But certain spots stay attached to people long after they are gone. And Mithibai Khau Galli clearly became one of those places.
