Is It Safe To Drink Beverages Straight From The Can?

Cracking open a can of soda, juice, or any other beverage feels refreshing and satisfying! But have you ever thought about how clean that can really be? Most of us sip our drinks straight from cans without a second thought, but it turns out that it might not be the safest habit. Here’s why you might want to pause before your next sip.

The ‘harmless’ habit of drinking straight from cans can cause more harm than you can imagine. Right from the storage units to the shop you eventually buy it from, the can’s surface is exposed to a lot of different environments, which makes it a breeding ground for hundreds of potential contaminants, including traces of rodent urine or faeces.

Yes, along with the delicious beverage inside, you might be sipping on dirt and dust that sticks to the can, which, by the way, are not always washed but mopped over. There are also a lot of bacteria that accumulate over days, and while the can may appear clean, it usually isn’t! Also, not to forget substances like Bisphenol A (BPA) that are found on can linings. BPA can not only contaminate drinks but also has the potential to disrupt hormones.

What You Can Do Instead

Many reports suggest that indigestion of these contaminants can lead to leptospirosis. As per the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, leptospirosis is a bacterial infection caused by Leptospira bacteria that can affect both humans and animals. It is to be noted that not everyone who gets infected shows symptoms, but some people may develop serious health issues.

Symptoms of leptospirosis –
1. Kidney or liver damage
2. Respiratory illnesses
3. Headache
4. Fever
5. Diarrhoea

What can you do to avoid any health issues from beverage cans?
1. Rinse and clean the cans – You can clean them under running water or with a tissue, fresh cloth, or wipes.
2. Pour the drink into a glass or use a straw.
3. Store the cans in clean and dry places, like the refrigerator.
4. Avoid drinking from damaged cans.
