Is Mumbai’s Iconic Aram Eatery Closing Soon? Capitol Cinema Redevelopment Moves Forward

Aram Mumbai

When it comes to food, Mumbai is a heaven full of iconic spots, and some of them carry decades of memories, especially because of their signature tastes. Among these classics is ‘Aram’, a beloved Maharashtrian restaurant near CST that many people grew up visiting. However, we don’t know how long it will continue operating. Read to know why!

Mumbai’s Iconic Aram Faces An Uncertain Future

One of the most go-to Maharashtrian restaurants is Aram, located just opposite Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. This place has been serving customers for over 87 years. It operates inside the premises of the historic Capitol Cinema. What started as a simple eatery soon became a favourite spot for Vada Pav, Misal Pav, Kothimbir Vadi, and Thalipeeth.

But now, there are concerns about how long this place will continue operating. As per the Free Press Journal, earlier this year, the K Raheja Group acquired Nadir Company Pvt Ltd. This company holds the lease for the cinema property. The building is around 147 years old and falls under heritage grade II-A status. The lease has been renewed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation until April 30, 2035.

As part of the renewal conditions, the developer must preserve the heritage character of the structure. The land can only be used for a cinema, shops, and residential purposes.

What’s Next For The Historic Cinema Property?

Some shopkeepers inside the cinema complex have already been approached. One of them shared that a representative from the builder asked him to vacate and offered less than ₹20 lakh. He refused, saying the amount does not match the value of the location. According to him, other shop owners have also received similar offers.

However, ‘Aram’ in Mumbai has not been contacted yet. According to the Free Press Journal, Kaustubh Tambe, who is associated with the restaurant, said that no one has approached them so far. He added that the restaurant has served lakhs of customers over the years and expressed hope that the new owners will act fairly and not ask them to leave.
