Viral Video Claims Amul Girl Was Inspired By Shobha Tharoor

Amul Girl is once again gaining attention because a viral video has claimed that she has a connection with Shashi Tharoor.  In the video, Sanjay Arora (@sanjayarora) claimed that the famous Amul Girl was inspired by Shashi Tharoor’s younger sister, Shobha Tharoor Srinivasan. The video begins with him showing a pack of Amul butter and pointing at Amul Girl and saying, “What does this girl and Shashi Tharoor have in common? And no, it’s not a joke.” The video continues with him saying, “Yep, the queen of puns came from the sister of the King of Vocabulary.”

Sanjay Arora went back in history and mentioned that in 1966, Amul was struggling with its advertising. The famous brand Polson, ruled the butter market with its sweet mascot. Amul wanted to do something different. The team reviewed over 700 photographs until they shortlisted one. Guess who it was? A ten-month-old Shobha Tharoor. For a little change, artist Eustace Fernandes drew her with blue hair, polka dots and big eyes, the video claimed. It instantly caught everyone’s attention and became a sensation.

Shobha Tharoor’s Reaction

The video of Sanjay Arora linking Amul Girl with Shobha Tharoor quickly went viral all over the internet. To this, Shobha Tharoor reacted with a post on X. She posted her childhood photo and wrote, “Received a charming reel posted by @chiefsanjay from so many asking whether I inspired the UtterlButterly blue-haired cherub. Yes, I was the first Amul baby. Yes #ShyamBenegal took the photos. My sister @SmitaTharoor was in the 2nd colour campaign. We may have. But we don’t know.

However, Amul contradicted this claim and replied to Sanjay Arora’s post, “Dear Sir, we wish to clarify that the Amul Girl illustration is not influenced by Ms Shobha Tharoor. She was created by Mr Sylvester daCunha and illustrator Mr Eustace Fernandes.”
