Pune Eatery Levies ₹20 Penalty For Wasting Food; Netizens Call It An “Excellent Move”

Would you believe us if we told you that an eatery in Pune is charging ₹20 extra for wasting food? Yes, it’s true! Apart from the dishes, the menu informs customers about this extra penalty levied for food wastage. Many netizens have applauded the move and called it an “excellent initiative.”

Pune Eatery Charges Extra For Wasting Food

If you have a habit of wasting food, then you might have to pay extra for that at an eatery in Pune. X  user, @rons1212, recently posted an image showing a South Indian menu at a hotel, with idlis and sambhar for ₹40, filter coffee for ₹30, and more. But what caught our eye was a ₹20 charge for wasting food. The post has since gone viral on social media.

The user uploaded the image with the caption, “A hotel in Pune is charging ₹20 extra if you waste food. Every restaurant should do the same, weddings and functions should start charging fines too!” Honestly, we share the same opinion, as we can’t even imagine how much food goes to waste just because many people put too much on their plates and then don’t finish it. This Pune eatery wants to stop this habit by simply stating, “You will be charged ₹20 for wasting food.”

Netizens React: Call It An “Excellent Move”

Many users applauded this move. One user said, “Charging for food waste is a smart move, reduces excess and promotes responsibility. Scaling this to weddings/events could curb the massive food waste crisis. Behavioural nudges work better than bans,” and added that more restaurants should adopt this rule. Another user called it an “excellent initiative”, adding that there should be a penalty for wasting food.

However, another X user wrote, “What if the food is not edible or doesn’t suit my taste? I wouldn’t know it beforehand for sure.” He added that this policy might not be logical, as many might not even like the taste of the food after ordering it. Another user made a valid point, saying that the portion size should be enough for one person and not too large, to avoid wastage.

The name of the hotel was not revealed in the tweet. But we can say this rule is excellent. It would seriously make people think twice before wasting food. What do you think of this? Should this rule be the new norm at other restaurants and eateries? Let us know your thoughts.
