Ram Mandir Prasad On Amazon? E-Commerce Platform Fined ₹1 Lakh For Selling Ordinary Sweets As Prasad

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has now fined Amazon Seller Services Private Limited for selling ordinary laddoos and other sweets as “Shri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad”, without any approval from the Ram Temple Trust. Here’s what we know about this development so far.

CCPA Fines Amazon ₹1 Lakh Over Ram Mandir Prasad Listings  

According to India Today, CCPA has now ordered Amazon to pay a ₹1 lakh penalty within 15 days. The authorities found that sweets sold under the ‘Bihari Brothers’ brand by Chandu Trading Company were being marketed as Ayodhya Ram Temple prasad without any approval from the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust.

These products included Ghee Laddoos, Khoya Laddoos, Boondi Laddoos and cow’s Milk Peda. Reportedly, they were listed with descriptions which read, “Shri Ram Mandir Ayodhya Prasad” and “Lord Ram’s blessings”. Many people who thought they were genuine prasad from the mandir might have bought them as well.

Amazon Told Not To Sell Ordinary Sweets As Temple Prasad 

According to India Today, CCPA officials believe that reading these labels on ordinary sweets can mislead many devotees. They would naturally assume that the products are genuine. Moreover, commercial use of the Ram Mandir’s name without permission could also hurt the religious sentiments of millions of people.

Amazon has apparently been directed not to allow products to be listed using terms such as “prasad”, “mahaprasad” or “bhog” in the name of 10 major religious institutions without proper permission. These include Ram Janmabhoomi, Tirupati Devasthanam, Mata Vaishno Devi and Puri’s Jagannath Temple. The decision also aims to prevent sellers from using the names of major temples to market ordinary products or sweets.

So, if you come across sweets being sold as prasad from any of these temples on Amazon, make sure you check whether they have the approval or not. Many people often fall for ordinary products thinking they are genuine.
