Tucked away in the leafy lanes of Juhu, Mumbai, The Gated Community is the kind of restaurant that immediately makes you want to settle in and stay for a while. The space has an easy sense of luxury without feeling like it is trying too hard, making it a natural choice for long dinners, catch-ups and evenings that slowly turn into drinks with friends.

The Gated Community Offers A Sophisticated Escape, But Do The Plates Match The Pomp?

The menu follows the same anything-goes philosophy. There is sushi, dumplings, tacos, flatbreads, pasta, salads and plenty of things designed to be passed around the table. Some plates are genuinely memorable, while others feel like they are simply ticking the right boxes.

The Liquid Prelude

The bar is where The Gated Community starts making a strong impression. There’s plenty of thought put into flavour, texture and presentation, with a few drinks that are almost as entertaining to look at as they are to sip.

Pink Peppercorn Cocktail: This is a bright, gin-forward drink with a bitter little surprise in the form of Campari caviar. The grapefruit gives it a refreshing citrussy opening, while the peppercorn syrup is meant to bring some warmth into the mix. In reality, the peppercorn barely makes an appearance. It is there, but more as a background note than a defining flavour.

The Godfather: If you prefer your cocktails darker and more spirit-forward, this is the one to order. The bourbon brings plenty of character, while the Kahlúa adds a rounded sweetness without making the drink cloying. There is also a gentle smoky note at the beginning, followed by aromatic bitters that give the finish some much-needed depth.

Small Plates & Dim Sum: The Highs And Lows

The small plates section takes you on a rather enthusiastic trip across Asia and beyond. There is no shortage of variety, although the quality can swing from excellent to merely acceptable.

Starters We Savoured!

Golden Money Bag Dumpling: This was one of those dishes that disappeared from the table much faster than expected. The wonton wrapper is thin and crisp, breaking almost instantly when you bite into it. Inside, the filling of edamame, corn and cheese is soft, creamy and slightly sweet. The combination of that crunchy exterior and rich filling makes it dangerously easy to keep reaching for another one.

Dong Po Pork Belly: Pork belly can easily become too fatty or too soft, but this version gets the texture just right. It has a satisfying chew while still carrying plenty of flavour from the braising liquid. Star anise and red chilli bring warmth and fragrance without turning the dish into a spice bomb. It is rich, comforting and exactly the sort of plate that works well when shared.

Hamachi Sushi: The hamachi is the star here, and thankfully the kitchen lets it remain one. The fish is buttery and fresh, while the bell peppers add a gentle sweetness and mild spice. Nothing feels overloaded, which works in its favour. It is a simple, balanced sushi roll that shows restraint can sometimes be more effective than adding five different flavours to one bite.

Peking Chicken Wonton: This one needed a little more finesse. The chicken filling is generously seasoned, with black pepper providing a noticeable kick, but the wrapper is simply too thick. Instead of getting a delicate bite followed by the filling, you end up chewing through more dough than necessary.

Beetroot Sushi: This is easily one of the prettier plates on the table, thanks to the blue pea rice. Unfortunately, the looks promise more than the flavour delivers. Beetroot, carrot, cream cheese and lettuce create a fairly mild combination, but there is not enough acidity or heat to give it some personality. Even the addition of spicy sauce does not quite bring it to life.

Prawns Taco: The prawns work, the flavours make sense, and it delivers what you expect from a familiar seafood taco. The problem is that it does not really give you a reason to remember it once the next dish arrives.

Chicken Satay: The chicken is juicy and nicely charred, while the peanut sauce is smooth, creamy and indulgent. It is not exactly reinventing satay, but it does not need to. Sometimes a well-executed classic is all you want.

Carbs, Cheese & The Star Of The Evening

Truffle Mushroom Flatbread: Star Dish. Earthy, rich and deeply satisfying. The truffle comes through without completely taking over, while the peppery arugula cuts through the richness. If you enjoy truffles, order this.

Ricotta & Cherry Tomato Crostini: Fresh And Easy. The creamy ricotta works beautifully with sweet cherry tomatoes, fresh basil and a sharp balsamic finish. Light, simple and very easy to like.

Coastal Seafood Flatbread: A Pleasant Surprise. Seafood on a flatbread can be a risky proposition, but this one works. The seafood tastes fresh and, most importantly, does not carry any unpleasant fishy aftertaste.

Rigatoni With Burrata: Bold And Spicy. The sauce brings serious heat, but the creamy burrata helps calm things down. The chives add a fresh, herby finish that keeps the dish from feeling too heavy.

The Grazing Table

Then there is the restaurant’s Grazing Table, which is almost tailor-made for groups on request.

The selection includes familiar favourites such as Prawn Caesar Salad, Watermelon Tataki and Burrata and Fig Salad. The Watermelon Tataki completely steals the show, but together they create a generous and colourful spread.

Then there is an artisanal cheese selection, hummus, marinated olives and smoky baba ganoush.

Desserts

The Matcha Tres Leches: The Matcha Tres Leches takes the classic soaked sponge and gives it a bitter-green backbone. A moist matcha sponge sitting in matcha-spiked tres leches, finished with a soft cap of whipped cream and a scatter of fresh berries. It’s a smart rework: the mild grassiness of the matcha cuts what could otherwise be a cloying dessert, and the berries add just enough tartness to keep each spoonful interesting rather than sweet for the sake of it.

The Chocolate Soba: The Chocolate Soba is the more ambitious of the two, and it mostly earns the effort. Strands of hazelnut dark chocolate mousse are shaped to resemble soba noodles and set over a bed of chocolate sponge and miso mousse, finished with caramel sauce, gold pearls and seasonal berries. The miso is the smartest addition here, lending a savoury undertow that keeps the dish from tipping into pure sugar. It’s the kind of dessert people will photograph before they eat it.

The Verdict

The Gated Community knows exactly what kind of evening it wants to create. It is polished, comfortable and built around the idea of taking your time. The cocktails bring some theatre, and the menu gives groups plenty to choose from.

Would I return? Yes, but I would be selective about what lands on the table.
