Some meals are about the food, while others are about the feeling of being welcomed home. Makaan, a new vegetarian dining destination opening in Juhu on October 20, wants to bring both to the table. Backed by two culinary entrepreneurs, Karan Shah of Swati Snacks and Samyukta Nair, the restaurateur behind Michelin-starred Jamavar and MiMi Mei Fair, the space is built around the warmth and generosity of a Gujarati home.

Gujarati Hospitality, Served Generously: What To Expect At Makaan, Juhu

The idea is simple: Gujarati home cooking, served with the kind of hospitality that makes every meal a reason to stay a little longer. Think familiar flavours, comforting dishes and a table where there is always room for one more person.

According to Brown Paper Bag, the menu brings together Gujarati favourites that are as much about texture and flavour as they are about nostalgia. Expect Locho and Panki to start, followed by Satpadi Roti paired with Gatta Shaak. And if you have saved room for dessert, there is Shrikhand soft serve to round off the meal.

Rather than making the experience feel like a formal dining occasion, Makaan wants to capture the ease of eating at someone’s home, where food arrives generously and nobody is in a hurry to leave. It is an approach rooted in Gujarati hospitality, where feeding people well is a way of making them feel welcome.

Two Culinary Entrepreneurs, One New Address

For Karan Shah, whose family-run Swati Snacks is known for its vegetarian Gujarati and Indian fare, Makaan brings the warmth of regional cooking into a new setting. Samyukta Nair, meanwhile, brings her experience as a restaurateur behind celebrated dining destinations, including Jamavar and MiMi Mei Fair.

Together, they are bringing a new spot to Juhu that puts Gujarati food and the spirit of hosting at its centre. With its focus on familiar dishes and generous hospitality, Makaan aims to make the experience less about a quick meal and more about gathering around the table.

The new restaurant opens in Juhu, Mumbai, on October 20 and will open daily from 11 am to 11 pm, and will welcome diners on a walk-in-only basis. The space is entirely vegetarian, so expect a menu centred on Gujarati home cooking and comforting regional flavours.
