Skyr is a thick and creamy dairy product that originates from Iceland and has been part of its food culture for thousands of years. Similar to yoghurt, skyr is technically a type of fresh cheese. Want to know what it is and how it is different from dahi and Greek yoghurt? Read on!
What Is Skyr?
Skyr is made by adding live cultures to skimmed milk and then straining it multiple times to remove the whey. This process gives Skyr its classic dense texture and high protein content while keeping it low in fat.
At first, skyr may look similar to Greek yoghurt, but it’s not the same. The key differences between Greek yoghurt and Skyr are that both are strained, but the extent of straining is greater in Skyr. As a result, skyr is usually thicker and slightly milder in taste. Greek yoghurt tends to have a more noticeable tang and a creamier taste, thanks to its higher fat content. In terms of nutrition, both are rich in protein, but skyr often has the edge for being lower in fat and calories.
Difference Between Skyr & Dahi
When compared to dahi, which is a staple in Indian households, the differences become even more distinct. Dahi is made by fermenting milk with natural cultures, often at home, and has a softer, more fluid consistency. It has a gentle sourness and is commonly eaten with meals or used in cooking. Unlike skyr and Greek yoghurt, dahi is not strained, so it retains more whey and has a lighter texture. Nutritionally, dahi provides probiotics and essential nutrients, but it generally offers less protein per serving than skyr.
Choosing which one is better depends on your needs and preferences. If you are looking for something high in protein and low in fat, skyr is an excellent choice. Greek yoghurt offers a balance between creaminess and nutrition, making it versatile for both sweet and savoury dishes. Dahi, on the other hand, is comforting, familiar, and easy to incorporate into everyday Indian meals.
Each of these has its place in a balanced diet. It all depends on how you plan to use it and what fits your lifestyle.
