Noorjahan mango

While Alphonso, Dasheri, Kesar, and Banganapalli are among India’s most popular and widely loved mango varieties, the country is home to more than 1,000–1,500 varieties of the fruit. Many of these remain relatively unknown because they are either grown in limited regions or are not widely available in markets. One such rare variety is Madhya Pradesh’s Noorjahan mango, and here’s why this mango variety deserves all the attention right now!

Meet Madhya Pradesh’s Noorjahan, The Queen Of Mangoes

Known for its enormous size, a single Noorjahan mango can weigh between 3 and 3.5 kilograms. Also known as the ‘Queen of Mangoes’, its rarity and unique characteristics make it a highly sought-after variety, with a single fruit fetching thousands of rupees.

According to Moneycontrol, farmers in Madhya Pradesh‘s Katthiwada region sold a Noorjahan mango, weighing 3.3 kilograms, for Rs 3,800 this season. Katthiwada, about 250 km from Indore, is a famous area for mango cultivation in Madhya Pradesh, and one of the few areas where this rare mango variety thrives during summer.

From its rarity and massive size to the strong demand it commands, several factors contribute to the Noorjahan mango’s premium price tag. Often referred to as the ‘Queen of Mangoes’, the variety is believed to be the world’s largest mango. It is known for its saffron-hued colour, delicate skin, smooth texture, low fibre content, and soft, juicy flesh.

What’s This Mango Variety’s Link To Afghanistan?

According to locals, this variety of mangoes actually originated in Afghanistan and is named after the queen Noor Jahan. Many food historians have claimed that this mango first came to India from Afghanistan via Gujarat, and later reached Madhya Pradesh. The Times of India reported that local farmers believe they are the only growers of this mango variety.

According to farmers, Madhya Pradesh’s climate, soil, and weather conditions help produce Noorjahan mangoes of exceptional size and quality, although their cultivation period is shorter than that of most other varieties.
