Lucknow is home to Uttar Pradesh’s first fruit and mango winery, Maeve Meadery. It is located in the renowned mango-growing belt of Malihabad. The winery is known for producing artisanal beverages using locally grown mangoes, honey, mulberries, and mint. Here’s everything you need to know about this winery.
Lucknow Is Home To Uttar Pradesh’s First Mango Winery
Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow has a mango winery where alcoholic beverages are produced using mangoes and a variety of local fruits. According to The Times of India, the winery has been set up inside a 100-acre mango orchard with an investment of close to ₹10 crore. It was founded by Madhavendra Deo Singh, who had to go back and forth between government offices to secure environmental clearances.
According to ThePrint, the winery is located inside Madhav Udyan, the family’s sprawling estate, after which the Malihabad mango belt was once named. The belt produces some of India’s most celebrated mangoes and also holds a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. According to Madhavendra Deo Singh, Malihabad is to mangoes what Napa Valley is to grapes.
This Winery Produces Mango, Banana, Mulberry & Mint Wines
The winery building is fully functional, but wine production takes place on the ground floor. It houses large fermentation vats and a cold storage room filled with fruits, along with malt and hops imported from Belgium. Interestingly, this is also where the winery’s winemaster experiments with new flavours. The second floor houses the office, while generations of mango trees surround the building outside.
Madhavendra Deo Singh also told ThePrint that they teach local farmers how to grow mangoes. According to him, his father taught him how to properly cut mangoes because the right cut makes a big difference. The machines for the winery came from Chennai, while the mangoes come from Madhavendra’s own orchards and neighbouring farmers.
The current range includes mango, banana, mulberry, and traditional mint wines. A mango chilli wine and a beetroot-jamun mixed fruit variant are also expected soon. Wine bottles here are sold for around ₹1,200. According to Madhavendra Deo Singh, the wines carry the aroma of real fruits instead of artificial flavours. He also claims that the wines are intended to help reduce inflammation and improve skin and gut health.
