Japan might have suspended the imports of fresh mangoes from India, but you will be surprised to know that London is going crazy over the Kesar Keri mango variety from Gujarat and is absolutely ready to pay any price for it. Believe it or not, Indian mangoes are becoming hugely popular across the UK and Europe, and you definitely want to know the reason.
London Is Going Crazy For Kesar Mangoes From Gujarat
Japan have temporarily closed its doors to Indian mangoes, but the global love for them remains high. Every year, crates and crates of Kesar and Alphonso mangoes are flown in from Gujarat to Heathrow Airport in London. For many, they smell like pure nostalgia inside a cardboard box.
According to The Economic Times, for many Indians living in the UK, the arrival of mango season is not just a food trend but something much more special. Many Indian families, especially Gujaratis in cities like London, Leicester and Birmingham, wait for Indian mangoes to arrive every year. It is basically a tangible memory of their homeland, and they are willing to buy them regardless of the price.

Why Indian Mangoes Are So Popular In The UK
Importer Digvijaysinh Gohil shared with The Economic Times that the craze for Indian mangoes is not limited to the Indian diaspora. Even British and European consumers are developing a taste for premium Indian mangoes, especially Gujarat’s famous Kesar variety and Maharashtra’s Alphonso mangoes. Both these varieties are known for their sweet taste, aroma and juicy texture.
Mangoes might be grown all over the world, but they cannot match the taste of Indian Kesar and Alphonso mangoes. According to exporters, mangoes from countries such as Brazil and Peru may look attractive, but they often lack flavour. Indian mangoes, on the other hand, are fragrant and known for their saffron-coloured juicy pulp.
Restaurants and dessert businesses have also added to the demand for Indian mangoes in London. According to The Times of India, many places use Indian mangoes to prepare mango cheesecakes, milk cakes and seasonal drinks. This is the reason why Indian mangoes, especially the Kesar variety from Gujarat, enjoy immense popularity in London and across Europe.
