With November comes a slight nip in Delhi’s air. And the air conditioners gradually start giving way to warmer comforters. It was on one such evening when I was craving Asian cuisine and dialled up KURO. For those who don’t know, it is currently operating from Greater Kailash Part 1. I ordered up quite a storm, and here’s how my food experience was.

What Is KURO?

Before we get down to the review, it’s important to talk about KURO. It is a sushi-led, but not sushi-only, eatery. Did you know that KURO means ‘black’ in Japanese? Yes, and it shows the brand’s understated and distinctive personality. Behind the scenes, Chef Anil leads the sushi kitchen, who brings along a decade of experience as Sushi Sous Chef at Town Hall. He is supported by Chef Riniya and Chef Gaurav Juyal, also a Town Hall veteran, who heads the hot kitchen.

Appetisers FTW!

One of the biggest complaints I tend to have from restaurants is their shoddy packaging when it comes to delivering food, but not with KURO. The food came in carefully packed disposable boxes.

Since this is a sushi-led kitchen, I had to order this! I ordered their Crispy Asparagus Sushi, which was deliciously mild and crunchy. The perfect option for vegetarians, this is a light nibble that you will want to savour. The next item on my to-eat list was Prawn XO Dim Sum. The dim sum has a soft wrapper and a juicy filling. The filling is enriched with herbs, and it’s juicy to bite into. I paired it with their chilli oil, which really brought out the flavours.

The next item that I tried was their Spicy Edamame. Although I expected heat, it was mildly flavoured. You will have to work your way around this dish as the yummy edamame pods come with the shell. So prying it open as one eats is a fun experience, but it does take the heat away. Hence, I totally recommend people with low heat tolerance to give it a try, as they won’t find it spicy, but pleasantly delightful instead.

Some More Food That I Savoured

After all the light bites, I moved on to their Shanghai Chicken. The saucy dish is perfect for people who like cafe-style Chinese food. The bite-sized nibbles had been perfectly coated with the tangy sweet sauce, and it was easy to bite into, as the chicken itself was quite tender.

I paired this with their mains, which included the Chicken Jungle Curry and Burnt Garlic Fried Rice. The deliciously flavoured creamy sauce packs a yummy punch. I paired the gravy with their rice. It was the perfect accompaniment to the curry, and the aromatic rice tasted good even on its own. Together, the garlicky notes from the rice blended harmoniously with the Thai spices in the gravy.

Deliciously Sweet Endings

After finishing off these yummy dishes, I ended the meal with their Blueberry Cheesecake. The moment one bites into the cake, the soft and milky texture of the cake engulfs the taste buds. And with the tangy blueberry sauce adding the perfect zing, it is something you will not want to miss.

On a concluding note, I would totally recommend this place to someone who’s craving cafe-style Thai food. After all, delicious food in the comfort of one’s home does sound like a novelty.
