Imagine walking through the charming streets of a small Italian town when, suddenly, the roads begin filling up with water. No, this isn’t a scene from a movie! Every summer, the town of Campagna in Italy deliberately lets water flow through its streets as part of a centuries-old tradition called ‘A Chiena, and here’s why you should experience it once in your life!

‘A Chiena Di Campagna: Italy’s Unique Water Festival

‘A Chiena Di Campagna, or ‘A Chiena, comes from the local Salerno dialect and means “flood” or “full”. And for a few weeks every summer, the town quite literally lives up to it. The waters of the Tenza River are diverted through an old artificial channel, turning the streets, lanes and squares of Campagna into a flowing waterway.

What makes ‘A Chiena even more fascinating is that it wasn’t originally created as a festival. The tradition dates back centuries, when the waters of the Tenza were diverted through the town to clean its streets during the hot summer months. The flowing water also helped cool the town and manage its urban spaces. Over time, what began as a practical way of dealing with the summer heat and hygiene became an important part of Campagna’s identity.

Today, the tradition has transformed into a lively summer celebration that brings locals and visitors together. One of the highlights of ‘A Chiena is the Passeggiata, or the walk, when visitors can literally stroll through the water flowing along the historic streets.

Imagine walking through an Italian old town, surrounded by stone buildings and narrow lanes, except your feet are splashing through a stream instead of walking on dry streets. It is this unusual combination of history, architecture and water that makes the festival so fascinating.

And then comes the Secchiata, which is essentially a giant water fight where buckets of water replace the usual tourist souvenirs. Locals and visitors take to the streets armed with buckets, soaking one another in what is easily one of the most fun parts of the celebration.

A Summer Festival Like None Other!

During ‘A Chiena, Campagna’s historic centre takes on a completely different personality. The streets fill with water, people gather along the route, balconies come alive and music and other cultural events add to the festive atmosphere.

The event is not simply about getting wet. The local tourism authorities describe it as a tradition that connects Campagna’s history, community and relationship with water, while giving visitors a chance to experience the town in a very different way. If flooding the streets during the day sounds magical, imagine seeing the same thing at night.

The ‘A Chiena di Mezzanotte, or Midnight Chiena, sees the water flow through the historic centre after dark, creating a completely different atmosphere. Under the night sky, the illuminated streets and flowing water make the centuries-old town look almost surreal.

The festival takes place during the summer, generally between July and August. Even if you have missed this year’s fun, make sure you plan your Italian trip around this time next year and see a whole different side of Italy!
