Every year after the rains, India turns into a paradise for migratory birds. Thousands of birds fly in from places like Siberia, Central Asia, and Europe, filling the country’s skies and wetlands with colour and sound. Between September and November, these visitors can be seen across India’s forests, lakes, and sanctuaries, a perfect time for birdwatchers and nature lovers alike. And if you’re one of them, then here are some birdwatching destinations in India you cannot miss!
Growing Interest In India’s Birding & Nature Destinations
According to Agoda’s latest data, interest in birding destinations such as Kochi, Coimbatore, Alwar, and Cuttack has grown by 41% year-on-year. This rise shows how more travellers are choosing calm, nature-filled getaways over busy city breaks. One of the top destinations preferred by birdwatchers is Kochi. It has become the fastest-growing destination, with international searches jumping 2.6x year-on-year. Surrounded by birding spots like Thattekad and Kumarakom, it offers a mix of tropical forests and peaceful backwaters.
Why is Kochi in the lead? Here, travellers can spot Siberian cranes, Brahminy kites, and Marsh Harriers. Agoda data also shows big interest from Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore, with searches from Hong Kong up by 66%.
Cuttack saw a 33% rise in domestic searches, thanks to its connection with Chilika Lake — Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon and a major winter home for birds. From September, flamingos, herons, and painted storks arrive here after long flights from Central Asia and Siberia. The lake’s scenic boat routes and community conservation work have turned it into a model for eco-friendly tourism.
Paradise For Birdwatchers
Beyond Kochi and Cuttack, here are two more destinations perfect for your next birdwatching trip. Searches for Alwar grew by 19% among Indian travellers. It sits close to Bharatpur’s Keoladeo National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of India’s best-known bird sanctuaries. Visitors come to see Siberian Cranes, Bar-headed Geese, and Painted Storks. Its easy access and good travel facilities make Alwar ideal for both new and experienced birdwatchers.
Coimbatore, near the Nilgiri biosphere, saw a 6% rise in domestic interest. Its misty forests and trails attract both trekkers and bird lovers. The region is known for unique species like the Nilgiri Flycatcher and Black-and-Orange Flycatcher.
