Carved From A Single Rock Over 1,200 Years Ago, The Pataleshwar Caves Are Pune’s Oldest Surviving Structure

Did you know that right in the middle of Jangali Maharaj (JM) Road in Pune lies the Pataleshwar Caves? These ancient caves were carved in the 8th century (over 1200 years ago) and were dedicated to Lord Shiva and Nandi, along with other deities. This historical landmark, possibly the oldest surviving structure in Pune, carries centuries of history within its walls. 

Pataleshwar Caves: Built During The Rashtrakuta Period 

Maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India, the Pataleshwar Caves, also known as the Panchaleshvara Temple, are rock-cut shrines built during the Rashtrakuta period in the 8th Century. The name ‘Pataleshwar’ means ‘Lord of the Underworld’, which is another name for Lord Shiva. You will be surprised to know that these caves were carved out of a single basalt rock and originally had three shrines dedicated to Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. 

Once inside, you will find a Shivalinga, a circular Nandi Mandapa and a few smaller shrines dedicated to Goddess Sita, Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Ram, Lord Lakshman and Lord Ganesha. The circular Nandi Mandapa, facing the Shivalinga, remains one of the most striking features. However, the caves remain unfinished, which adds to their mystery. While many people come here to pray, others prefer to sit quietly, soaking in its positive energy.

Ancient Architecture That Stands Out

The Pataleshwar Caves are indeed an architectural marvel with huge stone pillars and intricate carvings. Some also believe the structure may have drawn inspiration from the Elephanta Caves, which are also dedicated to Lord Shiva. What makes it unique is that the shrines inside the caves are carved at a lower level, symbolising the ‘underworld’ and adding meaning to its name. We believe this is what makes it truly fascinating. 

Even though parts of the temple were left incomplete, the caves continue to fascinate tourists and historians alike. According to some, the Pandavas are also believed to have taken shelter here during their exile, which adds another layer of mystery to this sacred spot in Pune! • By Air: The caves are around 27 minutes from Pune International Airport. You can easily book a cab to reach the site.
• By Train: The journey from Pune Railway Station to Pataleshwar caves will take you just around 12 minutes. You can take a cab or a local bus to get there.

Stop by the Jangali Maharaj Temple, take a stroll through Sambhaji Park, or pay a visit to the famous Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Temple.
