What Is The History Of Lodhi Garden?

The place where today Lodhi Garden, in 15th century Lodhi rulers chose this area as their burial ground. The British redesigned the space in 1936, turning it into a landscaped park and naming it Lady Willingdon Park, after the wife of the then Governor-General.

After India gained independence in 1947, the park was renamed Lodhi Garden, and it quickly became a must-visit spot in Delhi. In 1968, American architect Joseph Allen Stein, along with Garrett Eckbo, gave the garden a stunning makeover. They added a glasshouse, a sparkling fountain-adorned lake, and special sections like a bonsai garden and a rose garden.

What Makes This Garden Special?

This Delhi garden has a mysterious small tower, probably from the Tughlaq period. Most of the other structures were built by the Sayyid and Lodi dynasties. The tomb of Sultan Muhammad Shah Sayyid, built in 1444, is one of the few reminders of the Sayyid dynasty still standing in the park.

The Lodi rulers built some of the most impressive structures in the garden. The Bara Gumbad, or Big Dome, is a grand tomb surrounded by beautiful gardens. Nearby, the Sheesh Gumbad, or Mirror Dome, once had shiny tiles inside that reflected light like magic. Sikandar Lodi’s tomb is also here, and visiting these monuments will leave you completely awestruck by the history and beauty of this place.
