Why Was Eravikulam National Park Closed For Two Months?

The famous Eravikulam National Park in Kerala is located on the Western Ghats, covering parts of Idukki and Ernakulam districts. What makes this place more special is that it’s home to Nilgiri tahr, a rare mountain goat. According to NDTV, the park was closed for two months so these goats could have their babies in peace, without anyone disturbing them. Now, they’re ready to roam around again, and you can see them.

If you’re planning a visit, the park is open from 8 AM to 2 PM. Here, you can explore beautiful high-altitude grasslands and shola forests. Also, how can we forget chital, Nilgiri langurs, lion-tailed macaques, gaur, red muntjac, wild boar, and sambar roaming freely. Bird lovers will enjoy spotting Nilgiri pipits, Nilgiri wood pigeons, Nilgiri blue robins, Nilgiri flycatchers, and the Palani laughingthrush. Even a bright red-orange frog!

If you want to reach this park, it is near the hill town of Munnar and is easily accessible by road from both Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The nearest airports are Kochi and Coimbatore. They are about 148 km and 175 km away. Travellers can enjoy a smooth drive through the scenic Western Ghats while heading to this wildlife haven.

For visitors coming from Bengaluru, a road trip of around 470–500 km takes roughly 10 to 12 hours. The journey itself is filled with stunning views of mountains, valleys, and tea plantations.
