Every generation travels differently. While our parents often approached vacations like a race against time, trying to tick off every major attraction on their itinerary, millennials embraced a slightly more relaxed style, though the pressure to see and do it all still lingered. Gen Z, however, may just be the most laid-back travellers of the lot. Airbnb’s latest Urban Travel Dictionary highlights some of the hottest Gen Z travel trends, offering a fascinating glimpse into how this generation is redefining the way we explore the world.
10 Gen Z Travel Trends & What They Mean!
Airbnb’s new report, in partnership with YouGov, has decoded how young India travels today, and here are some of the popular travel trends:
1. Micro-Cation
Gen Z believes in travelling often rather than travelling big and that’s where micro-cations come into play. A short 24- to 72-hour getaway that serves as a quick reset, making travel a regular part of life rather than a once-a-year event.
2. Room Rotting
Instead of packing the itinerary with activities, travellers focus on relaxing indoors and letting the stay become the main experience.

Mirror tripping is travelling based on your personality. So you choose destinations, stays and experiences that reflect who you are.
5. Why-cation
When the reason for travelling matters more than the destination, you’re on a ‘why-cation’. These trips are inspired by a particular mood or desire, be it slowing down in nature, chasing adventure, or exploring an unfamiliar culinary scene.

Not planned, not optimised, just taking a trip specifically because you’re overwhelmed and need out. Gen Z are making travel a mental health tool, and honestly, that’s amazing!

8. Anti-itinerary Trips
Unlike travellers who prefer packed itineraries, Gen Z is choosing flexibility by leaving room for unplanned experiences. For them, spontaneity isn’t the absence of a plan, it’s the purpose of the trip.
9. Dry Tripping
Gen Z is embracing slow travel, prioritising rest, meaningful experiences, and personal well-being over bars, clubs, and packed social schedules. For this generation, the ideal getaway is more about tranquillity than constant activity.
10. Local Lore Hunting
Local lore hunting involves exploring the local places of a city or a town while travelling. 81% of Gen Z travellers enjoy exploring local markets, grocery stores, or everyday neighbourhood spots when they travel.
