India’s bullet train aspirations are set to go far beyond its first high-speed rail project currently under execution. While work on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor is progressing slowly, the government has already recognised seven additional routes connecting major cities such as Delhi, Varanasi, Pune, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Chennai as part of its long-term high-speed rail vision. Read on to know more about it.
India’s 7 Additional Bullet Train Routes
As per a report by News18, presently, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train is India’s only active high-speed rail project. Spanning 508 km, the route is being built using Japan’s renowned Shinkansen technology and is created to operate at speeds of up to 320 kmph. According to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the first stretch between Surat and Bilimora in Gujarat is expected to become operational by August 2027.
In another first for India, the project has introduced tunnel hood technology along the route. These structures are being installed at the entry and exit points of eight mountain tunnels, seven in Maharashtra and one in Gujarat, bringing the country in line with international bullet train safety standards.
Tunnel hoods play a crucial role in ensuring passenger comfort and structural safety. When bullet trains travel at speeds exceeding 300 kmph, they create sudden air pressure changes while entering and exiting tunnels. The hoods help regulate this pressure, preventing sonic boom-like effects that can cause discomfort to passengers and stress on the infrastructure.
Following the launch of the Surat-Bilimora section, the corridor will expand in phases with Vapi-Surat, Vapi-Ahmedabad and eventually the first inter-state stretch between Thane and Ahmedabad. The complete route will later connect Maharashtra and Gujarat through India’s fastest rail service.
What Are The 7 New Bullet Train Corridors?
Meanwhile, the government has proposed seven new bullet train corridors: Mumbai-Pune, Pune-Hyderabad, Hyderabad-Bengaluru, Hyderabad-Chennai, Chennai-Bengaluru, Delhi-Varanasi and Varanasi-Siliguri. These routes aim to connect some of India’s biggest economic, industrial, technology and tourism hubs.
Although no construction timelines have been announced yet, each corridor will undergo feasibility studies, approvals, funding arrangements and land acquisition before work begins.
