Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu announced this amazing news recently under the Centre’s regional connectivity scheme, UDAN. According to The Economic Times, these 100 new airports aim to improve regional air connectivity. The government is all set to invest approximately ₹30,000 crore for this major project.
There were 74 airports in 2014, but today India has 166 airports. This jump has set a record for the country’s civil aviation sector. Over the last 12 years, India has also completed work on a new airport or a new terminal roughly every 40 days. This announcement was made at Ahmedabad Airport, where Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu inaugurated India’s third ‘hub and spoke’ operation for passenger convenience.

Why Does India Need New Airports?
According to The Economic Times, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu also mentioned that civil aviation is the fastest-growing sector in the country. Plus, the demand for air connectivity is increasing from smaller cities and remote regions of the country, like Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, Himalayan regions, and islands like Lakshadweep and Andaman.
People residing in these places are now asking for an airport to be constructed in their area. This is why the authorities have decided to listen to these demands and move forward with the decision. The key challenge still remains to ensure effective domestic and international connectivity to these airports. Talking about the ‘hub and spoke’ model, the scheme began with Varanasi and Amritsar and has now expanded to Ahmedabad due to the large NRI community living there.
