Jammu & Kashmir Plans To Add 200 Smart E-Buses To Fleet; To Offer Free Travel For Women

The Jammu and Kashmir government is set to double its smart electric bus fleet by adding 200 new e-buses in Srinagar and Jammu. The move aims to strengthen public transport and help meet the rising demand for travel. Here is everything you need to know about this.

Jammu And Kashmir To Add 200 New Smart E-Buses

According to NDTV, Jammu and Kashmir is adding 200 more smart e-buses amid a spike in demand for eco-friendly transport and free bus service for women in the region. The expansion will extend bus services to more rural areas and tourist destinations in Srinagar and Jammu.

Reportedly, the procurement of these smart e-buses is in advanced stages. Authorities expect them to be inducted in Jammu and Srinagar cities in the next few months. However, the smart buses and other government-run bus services will continue to remain free for women passengers in Jammu and Kashmir.

Smart Buses To Strengthen Public Transport In The Region

As part of Srinagar Smart City Limited, 100 e-buses have been approved by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for Srinagar. Another 100 buses have also been approved for Jammu. According to NDTV, these electric buses have significantly transformed the public transport system in the region. They come equipped with air-conditioning systems, GPS tracking, and even smart ticketing.

Authorities also have plans to phase out traditional buses and replace them with newer ones. Moreover, the free bus service scheme also has intangible social benefits and will help many women commute safely and hassle-free in the region. Yes, the free service may lead to some revenue losses. However, authorities believe that it is a welfare scheme. Its impact cannot be measured only in terms of revenue, considering its benefits.
