5 Places Where The Odyssey Was Shot

1. Greece

As the home of Odysseus, Greece is known as one of the film’s most important settings. The filming took place across the Peloponnese region in March and April 2025, with several iconic locations featuring in the production.

Among them are Voidokilia Beach, famous for its horseshoe-shaped bay, Methoni Castle, a 13th-century Venetian fortress, and Acrocorinth, the majestic hilltop citadel that overlooks Corinth. The crew also shot at the secluded Almyrolaka Beach and Nestor’s Cave, which is believed to have served as the setting for the Cyclops sequences.

2. Morocco

Morocco’s rough terrain and historic architecture provide the perfect setting for the ancient world depicted in The Odyssey. Production reportedly took place in Marrakech, Tannane, El Haouz, Essaouira and Ouarzazate.

One of the notable locations is Aït Benhaddou, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed fortified village that reportedly doubles as Troy in the film. The centuries-old mud-brick settlement has already appeared in films such as Gladiator, The Mummy and Lawrence of Arabia.

3. Italy

Italy also plays a major role in bringing Homer’s world to life. Much of the filming took place in Sicily, especially on the island of Favignana, also known as Goat Island.

Christopher Nolan has stated that scenes were filmed at the hilltop Castello di Santa Caterina, a ruined fortress that called for the cast and crew to hike nearly 900 feet daily, while equipment was transported by helicopter. Additional filming reportedly took place across the Aeolian Islands, including Lipari, Vulcano and Basiluzzo, as well as in Malta.

4. Iceland

For Odysseus’ journey into the underworld, Nolan selected Iceland’s dramatic volcanic landscapes. The country offers an eerie, otherworldly atmosphere that perfectly suits one of the epic’s darkest chapters.

Filming locations include the black sand beaches and caves of Hjörleifshöfði, the scenic Snæfellsnes Peninsula, the Markarfljót River, and the harbour at Landeyjahöfn.

5. Scotland

The production also travelled to Scotland’s spectacular Moray Firth Coast, famous for its dramatic cliffs, sea stacks and coastal scenery.

The crew filmed at Findlater Castle and Culbin Forest, while a full-scale wooden Viking ship was seen at the port in Inverness during production, adding to the film’s grand historical setting.
