When choosing air travel for your journeys, a flight cancellation or delay is not the only problem you worry about. In the worst-case scenario, your luggage might also get lost. Several travellers have faced this problem. If someday, while travelling, your luggage gets lost at the airport, here are some steps you need to follow before you leave the airport premises. Scroll down to learn!
What To Do If Luggage Gets Lost At The Airport?
1. Check Baggage Carousel
Before you report your lost baggage, make sure you’re standing at the right baggage carousel. After checking, take a good look at all the bags, as sometimes you might confuse your luggage with someone else’s, or your bag might have passed right in front of you.
2. Check Lost & Found
After checking the baggage carousel, you can visit the lost and found desk. Sometimes, travellers accidentally pick up the wrong bags and return them to this desk once they realise their mistake. When inquiring about your missing luggage, provide the necessary details, as your bag might already have been returned there.

3. File A PIR
After that, go to the airline desk to report your missing luggage and file a complaint. You need to file a PIR, known as a Property Irregularity Report. This is an official report issued by the airline when your luggage is lost, delayed or damaged. This 10-character reference number can later be used to track your complaint and take follow up.
4. Get A Written Confirmation
Before you leave the airport, ask for a copy of the PIR report. In this report, make sure you double-check your phone number, email address, delivery address and other details. This report serves as official confirmation that you have filed a complaint about your missing luggage.
5. Show Your Baggage Track
When boarding your flight, you get a small paper receipt or sticker featuring your baggage tag number. When you go to the airline counter to report missing bag, make sure you show it to the staff. This will help them identify and track your luggage.
Next time you lose your luggage at the airport, don’t forget to follow these steps!
