Mumbai is riding high on the success of its new Metro Line 3, also called the Aqua Line. Now the authorities are planning a 30-minute airport-to-airport commute that will give a direct link between the city’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and the Navi Mumbai International Airport. Here’s more on this latest update.
Metro Between Two Airports Coming Soon In Mumbai
The new and much-anticipated Navi Mumbai Airport will commence operations by December 2025. Though the airport is advanced, it lacks one major thing: connectivity through a mass transit system. Maharashtra now has solid plans to change that. As per a report by The Indian Express, the proposed Metro Line 8, also called the Gold Line, will serve as the rapid transport system for this airport.
This metro line will have 20 stations along its route and will directly link Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) and the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). A dedicated high-speed connection between these two airports is essential. These hubs are expected to work as a twin-airport system and will serve the rapidly expanding Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Direct Metro Link To Cut Travel Time From 90 Minutes To 30
NMIA will handle significant passenger traffic, and smooth movement between the two airports will be crucial for transit fliers, airline crew, cargo operators and more. Moreover, road travel between these two points currently takes 70-90 minutes, depending on traffic. This direct metro link will cut the time down to 30 minutes.
According to a report by The Indian Express, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been submitted to the state government. Clearances have also been secured from both the Urban Development and Finance Departments. As per the DPR, the corridor is expected to cost around ₹23,000 crore. The 20 stations planned along Mumbai Metro Line 8 are:
- Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Terminal 2
- Phoenix Mall
- SG Barve Marg
- Kurla
- Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT)
- Garodia Nagar
- Baiganwadi
- Mankhurd
- Vashi
- Sanpada
- Juinagar
- LP Junction
- Nerul 1
- Nerul 2
- Seawoods
- Apollo Hospital
- Sagar Sangam
- Targhar
- Navi Mumbai International Airport West
- Navi Mumbai International Airport Terminal 2.
The project includes six underground and 14 elevated stations. The corridor will connect with at least six other metro lines in Mumbai, suburban rail networks, bus terminals, and the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT). The tendering process is yet to begin.
