Six-Lane Chittoor-Thatchur Expressway To Open For Public From May 1; Routes, Timings, Stops & More

The Chittoor-Thatchur six-lane greenfield expressway is almost completed and is set to open to the public from May 1. The inauguration of the expressway will make the northern parts of Chennai in the Tiruvallur district the first-ever region in Tamil Nadu to get entry to an access-controlled expressway. Read on to know more about the development.

Chittoor-Thatchur Expressway Nears Completion

As per the reports by The News India Express, the expressway’s total distance is 116.5 km, and only 20.5 km is left to be widened, and the remaining work is scheduled to be completed by December 2026. Once completed, the expressway will mainly allow faster freight movement from industrial units in Bengaluru, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh to Kamarajar Port (Ennore) and Kattupalli ports without entering Chennai city. Additionally, it will be the state’s first highway to have closed toll plazas, which will allow vehicles to pay fees only for the exact distance travelled between the entry and exit points.

As per reports, the expressway area between Chittoor and Uthukottai has been widened into a six-lane access-controlled expressway with a design speed of 100 km/h. The expressway was also opened for trial a few days ago. The project has been divided into four packages and developed with an estimated cost of ₹5,486.32 crore.

Expressway To Open For Public On May 1

A senior official from the NHAI Chittoor Project Implementation Unit told the news portal that the first phase of 43.8 km and the third phase of 34.66 km have been completed fully. He also informed that the second phase, covering 17.58 km between Nagari and Pallipattu, has only minor work pending. Once this is completed, the highway will be opened to traffic on May 1.
