On the occasion of World Tourism Day, here’s a list of places in India where you’ll need a special permit, along with details on how to apply and the cost.
What Is An Inner Line Permit?
An Inner Line Permit (ILP) is an official travel document that even Indian citizens need to enter or stay in some protected areas during travel. It was introduced to help protect the interests, culture and traditions of local communities.
This special permission rule has its roots in the British era. In 1873, the British government introduced the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, which created an “Inner Line”. People from the plains could not travel beyond this line.

Which Places Need An ILP?
You need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for travelling to Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Manipur, and Nagaland.

Arunachal Pradesh
How To Apply?
You can apply for an Arunachal Pradesh ILP online through the official e-ILP portal or offline at authorised offices such as a Deputy Commissioner’s office or Arunachal Bhawan. For the application, you’ll need to submit the documents, along with a recent photograph. Pay the applicable fee and collect or download your permit.
What Is The Cost?
The Arunachal Pradesh ILP costs ₹300 for up to 3 days and ₹500 for 4 to 14 days.

Mizoram
How To Apply?
You can apply for a Mizoram ILP online through the official portal or offline at authorised Mizoram Houses in New Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Shillong, Silchar and Mumbai. You can also get a temporary ILP at entry points such as Lengpui Airport, Vairengte, Bairabi and Sairang Railway Station by submitting your ID and required details.
What Is The Cost?
A temporary tourist ILP for Mizoram costs ₹350 when applied online and is valid for up to 15 days. You can also apply for the Regular ILP category for longer stays.

Manipur
How To Apply?
You can apply for a Manipur ILP online through the official Manipur ILP portal by selecting the permit type, filling in your details, and making the payment. For an offline Manipur ILP, you can apply at Imphal Airport, Mao Gate, Jiribam Railway Station, or the Office of the Deputy Commissioner.
What Is The Cost?
A Temporary ILP for Manipur costs ₹100 and is valid for up to 30 days.

Nagaland
How To Apply?
You can apply for a Nagaland ILP online through the official portal, filling in your travel details, uploading the required documents and making the payment. For offline applications, you can visit Nagaland House offices in New Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati and Shillong, or government offices in Nagaland, including the Commissioner’s Office in Kohima and DC offices across the districts.
What Is The Cost?
A domestic tourist ILP for Nagaland costs ₹200 and is valid for 30 days.
