India isn’t just launching premium trains; it’s also upgrading station experiences in a big way. Now, one of the most challenging railway projects is in the works, connecting remote Himalayan regions. The Bilaspur–Manali–Leh railway line is set to transform travel with the world’s highest railway station. Read on to know more!
Bilaspur–Manali–Leh Railway Line In Plan
The route will begin from Bilaspur and pass through Mandi, Manali, Rohtang, Keylong, and Sarchu before reaching Leh. According to News24, this line will bring several remote Himalayan regions onto the railway map for the first time.
The railway line will pass through very difficult mountain areas, so engineers will rely a lot on tunnels and bridges. Around 62 tunnels will be built, covering nearly 270 kilometres, which means about 55% of the entire route will go underground. Along with this, 116 big bridges will be constructed to help the train cross deep valleys and rivers in the mountains.

World’s Highest Railway Station In India
One of the coolest highlights of this project is the Tengla station. As per News24, it will be built at a height of about 5,359 metres (17,580 feet), which can make it the highest railway station in the world, even higher than stations on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. Another exciting feature is the Keylong station. It will be built completely inside a tunnel, making it India’s first fully underground station in such extreme mountain conditions.
As for the railway line, trains on this route are expected to run at speeds of up to 100 km per hour. Once completed, travel time between Delhi and Leh could drop sharply. What currently takes nearly 40 hours by road may be reduced to around 20 hours by train. The estimated cost of this mega project is around ₹1.31 lakh crore. The project report has already been submitted to the Ministry of Defence, and construction will begin after final approval.
