The Kumbh is poised to initiate a significant policy shift in the city with the upcoming board meeting. The meeting will present the proposal to ban the sale of raw meat across the city. Haridwar To Ban Sale Of Raw Meat

According to a Hindustan Times report, the plan aims to enhance cleanliness standards and address the increasing problem of stray dogs. Reportedly, the meat shops have been contributing to cleanliness challenges in the city. The plan seeks to ban the sale of raw meat across the municipal limits and relocate such businesses to the outskirts.

As per TOI, the civic authorities are planning to improve sanitation control and address the stray dog menace in the city, which is increasing due to the meat shops. They aim to expand an existing restriction that bans liquor and meat within a 5-km radius of the city’s main bathing ghat.

An official told the portal that they have a majority on the board, and all members are ready to give their consent to the proposal. Additionally, she also added that the issue of cooked meat served in hotels and restaurants would also come up for discussion regarding whether they should move outside municipal limits.

Sale To Continue Outside Municipal Limits

An official informed the portal that currently, the sale of raw meat continues in areas like Jawalapur and Jagjeetpur. Many mutton, fish, and chicken markets operate in these localities. Other pork and buffalo meat was also sold in some places without a licence, leading the authorities to take action against them.

The issue of the meat ban in Haridwar had gained a lot of attention after Ganga Sabha, which administers the Har-ki-Pauri area. The area recently sought stricter actions with rules declaring the Haridwar area a meat-and-alcohol-prohibited zone. It calls for better enforcement of the rules to safeguard the pilgrimage city in anticipation of the Kumbh.
