Flea markets for clothes, jewellery and trinkets are common, but have you ever heard of an art flea market? Sounds interesting, right? Delhi is planning to hold regular flea markets dedicated to art where many artists will get a chance to showcase and sell their paintings, handicrafts and more. Here’s everything you need to know about this new market.
NDMC To Host Art Flea Market At Lodhi Road
Annual art festivals and flea markets are common, but art flea markets are still carving out their space in Delhi’s art scene. As per a report by Hindustan Times, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is planning to host regular art flea markets near Lodhi Road. Here, artists and painters will be provided a platform to showcase their work and sell it directly to collectors.
Not just paintings, but sculptures and handicrafts will also be part of this upcoming market. A senior NDMC official shared with Hindustan Times that the decision to host a regular art-dedicated market was made during a consultative meeting on holding cultural events in public places. The organisers are planning to start a series of cultural events, beginning with the art flea market by the end of November. This will be followed by events focusing on classical and folk music.

The events don’t stop there. Organisers are also planning activities for students, including art workshops, children’s theatre and traditional storytelling sessions. It’s a wonderful initiative that gives people a chance to experience art and music within a close-knit community. Honestly, it’s not just fun but also educational.
NDMC vice-chairman Kuljeet Chahal shared with Hindustan Times that the Lodhi Road market will act as a common platform for artists, regardless of their background. Panel discussions will also be held to help them sell their paintings and other artworks. The series of cultural events will welcome people from across the city with their families. Along with Lodhi Market, Nehru Park is also being considered as a key venue for these events.
Moreover, at this art flea market, artists will be able to set up stalls and sell directly to art lovers from Delhi. But you must be wondering, what inspired them to come up with this market? Apparently, the idea behind this initiative is to develop an informal outdoor space where people can directly purchase from creators. It will also help budding artists reach a wider audience.
