As 77% Of Road Accident Death Involve Two-Wheelers, Maharashtra Launches New Safety Campaign

Road accidents are increasing day-by-day across India. With road safety being one of the most talked about topics, people still refuse to follow rules, leading to multiple accidents and deaths. Recently the Maharashtra government has decided to launch a campaign to curb road accident cases. Read on to know more about the new initiative.

Maharashtra Government To Launch A New Campaign

The study done by the officials highlights that 77% of road accident deaths in Maharashtra involve two-wheeler riders and pedestrians. After the study reveals the increasing number of road accidents involving two-wheeler riders, the state has now launched a dedicated campaign to deal with such cases, aiming to reduce road accident deaths by over 50% by 2030.

According to the Hindustan Times, the new campaign, called ‘Save Two-Wheeler Riders and Pedestrians in 2026’, was recently launched after a road safety review meeting held in the last week of January. In the meeting, accident data from across the states was analysed, and measures were finalised to reduce the road accident deaths. Not only this, but the transport department has also directed all regional transport offices to implement the new measures with immediate effect.

What Are The Instructions To Curb Such Accidents?

One of the main instructions is to not allow any two-wheeler rider to cross the toll booths without a helmet. Every toll plaza in Maharashtra will now have a signboard stating ‘No helmet, no entry’ on both sides, and radar-based interceptor vehicles will be used for its enforcement at the locations, as reported by the Hindustan Times.

A total of 36,450 accidents were reported in the state in 2025, as per the provisional data released by the state transport officials. Following the campaign, the department will also map all the accident-prone spots on national highways, as well as on arterial roads. Helmets will be made compulsory on all three major national or state highways in districts where all the major accidents have taken place over the years. RTOs have been instructed to collect all the FIRs related to accidents, which will later be examined by the Road Safety Cell.

Other instructions are to install radar-based interceptor vehicles on highways to monitor if the two-wheeler riders are wearing helmets or not.

There will also be major steps taken to improve pedestrian safety in crowded areas, like installations of protective fencing to prevent unsafe road crossings, painting zebra crossings, and construction of footbridges and subways. Additionally, RTOs will also conduct driving licence tests under CCTVs.
