Assam is all set to see a major transformation in its railway network. In what could be one of the biggest boosts to the state’s transport infrastructure in recent years, the Centre has cleared several key railway projects that promise to make travel smoother, faster, and more connected.

The decision came after a crucial meeting in New Delhi between Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Both leaders discussed ways to expand railway connectivity in Assam and the Northeast, Northeast Now reported. Soon after the meeting, Chief Minister Sarma took to X (formerly Twitter) to share the good news with the people of Assam.
He called the meeting very productive and revealed that the discussions focused on improving the railway’s footprint across the state. The aim, he said, is to make travel easier for people, connect remote areas better, and boost trade and tourism.
Here’s a look at what’s coming up for Assam:
- Three new Amrit Bharat trains will be introduced to and from Assam. These trains are part of Indian Railways’ modern initiative to offer comfortable, faster, and more reliable services.
- A new railway link from Umrangso to Lanka in the Hojai district will be developed. Umrangso, known for its scenic beauty, will finally get a direct connection.
- Another major development is the Kokrajhar–Gelephu Mindfulness City railway line, which will connect Assam with Bhutan. The Chief Minister said that work on this international link will now be fast-tracked.
- In addition, more stoppages will be added for major trains passing through Assam. This means passengers in smaller towns and districts will have better access to long-distance trains.
New Trains, Better Routes, And Bigger Dreams
Chief Minister Sarma thanked the Railway Minister for approving all these action points, saying that the expansion would help make Assam the gateway to the Northeast. According to Northeast Now, he added that improved railway connectivity would lead to more jobs, economic expansion, and improved access to healthcare and education for people living in rural areas.
Assam’s development will move into a new stage with these upcoming projects. The railway connectivity in Assam looks more promising than ever with new trains, improved routes, and even an international rail link in the works.
