Atal Tunnel In Himachal Pradesh Blocked Due To Fresh Snowfall; 1,000 Vehicles Stranded

Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla and its surrounding areas experienced a major thunderstorm on Sunday, followed by rain. Not only this, but higher regions in Kullu and Lahaul received fresh snowfall, which led to heavy traffic disruptions. Read on to know more about the weather conditions in Himachal Pradesh.

Parts Of Himachal Pradesh Witness Fresh Rainfall, Snowfall

According to a report by the Hindustan Times, more than 1,000 vehicles were stranded at the south portal of the Atal Tunnel, Rohtang Pass, after a fresh spell of snowfall in the higher reaches of Manali disrupted traffic on March 15.

Following the snowfall, a Manali-based police team arrived at the scene to initiate the rescue operation. The team guided the stranded vehicles toward Manali to clear the highway. The police requested that the Border Roads Organisation and other rescue teams deploy their personnel to ensure vehicles do not skid or slide on the roads. Police also urged the stranded people to be patient while the rescue operation was underway.

Weather Forecast For The Next Few Days

According to the news portal, the India Meteorological Department station in Bhuntar recorded 12 mm of rainfall, while Manali and Mandi received 8 mm each. Other parts of the state, like Kufri, Solan, Shimla, Sundernagar, Dharamshala and Kangra, also received rainfall. Dark clouds also covered the sky, reducing visibility in some areas, while the upper hills of Manali, including the Atal Tunnel, witnessed light snowfall.

The Shimla Meteorological Office forecast light rain and snow in the state until March 21 and issued an orange alert for lightning, thunderstorms and winds in Kullu and Shimla. Hail warnings have also been issued until March 19 for the Solan and Sirmaur districts.

Additionally, a yellow alert has been issued for lightning, thunderstorms, and winds in 10 out of 12 districts on the 16th, 18th, and 19th of March. Other parts of Himachal Pradesh, like Nahan, experienced a heatwave, while Tabo was the coldest location at night.
