On Saturday, a special sculpture, ‘Bengaluru’s Soul’, by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa, was unveiled at Terminal 2 of the Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru. Read on to know more about the development.
Jaume Plensa’s Sculpture At Bengaluru Airport
The famous Spanish artist Jaume Plensa’s 16 ft sculpture titled ‘Bengaluru’s Soul’ at Terminal 2 of Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) gained a lot of attention within minutes of being released on Saturday evening.
Jaume Plensa’s work, featuring interlaced ideograms of alphabets in different languages like Kannada, Arabic, Chinese, Tamil, Armenian, Korean, Greek, Hebrew, Thai, Hindi, Japanese and Latin, is woven together with mathematical symbols and adorns the arrival at Bengaluru Airport T2.
As per a report by The Hindu, the sculpture has been facilitated by the Biocon Foundation in partnership with KIA and has been installed at the Arrival Forecourt of Terminal 2. The sculpture installation was unveiled by H.E. Juan Antonio March Pujol, Ambassador of Spain to India, Priyank Kharge, Minister for Rural Development, Panchayat Raj, and Information Technology & Biotechnology, Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Chairperson, Biocon Group, and Hari Marar, Managing Director & CEO, Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), alongside artist Jaume Plensa.
More About Jaume Plensa’s 16 Ft Sculpture
The sculpture is installed in painted stainless steel and measures 500 x 319 x 375 cm. As per the news portal, the foundation stated that the sculpture highlights the city’s diversity, creativity, and global outlook. Mazumdar Shaw talked to the portal and said that the installation captures the spirit of a city where ideas, cultures, and innovation come together. She also shared that public art humanises civic spaces and fosters a shared sense of identity.
Hari Marar also spoke about the installation and stated that the foundation believes building resilient cities requires not just infrastructure but investment in culture and creativity. He further said that Terminal 2 is known as a cultural gateway, where infrastructure and artistic expression come together seamlessly, and ‘Bengaluru’s Soul’ reflects this vision. As millions pass through the BLR Airport, the foundation’s Art Programme creates memorable first and last impressions, reinforcing Bengaluru’s identity.
