Bengaluru entrepreneur surprise inspection

Running a restaurant is not just about coming up with ideas, preparing a menu, and attracting a rush of customers. It also requires maintaining high standards. Recently, Bengaluru-based entrepreneur Abhijit Gupta, co-founder of popular food chains like The Pizza Bakery, Paris Panini, and Smash Guys, conducted a surprise inspection of two cloud kitchens, and ended up firing three employees. Here’s why.

Bengaluru-Based Entrepreneur Conducts Surprise Inspection

During his ‘Saturday Surprise Check’, Abhijit Gupta (@abhijitgupta) visited two cloud kitchens of The Pizza Bakery. He dropped the video on Instagram with the caption, “Surprise check visits keep the pulse of the business real – what you see on paper and what’s on-ground can be two very different things. It’s these checks that keep our systems strong and our standards tighter.”

Beginning the inspection, he first went to the Yelahanka kitchen, where he advised the staff to use the rail to keep the order receipts. He explained that this would help avoid confusion and prevent orders from getting mixed up. Gupta also tasted the pizza and appreciated its flavour, calling it rich and delicious. He praised the team for maintaining high standards, saying, “Pizza Bakery has zero wrong items, that’s actually outstanding.”

His next stop was his newly-opened cloud kitchen outlet in Sahakarnagar, where he personally investigated a customer complaint. A customer had mentioned that the broccoli on a pizza lacked flavour and proper marination. To verify this, Gupta ordered the pizza on Swiggy just before arriving at the outlet. After tasting it himself, he admitted that the customer had a valid point and assured that the team would work on improving it. The general manager at this outlet also revealed that she has fired three people.

Action Against People Consuming Narcotics

During the inspection, the general manager at the Sahakarnagar outlet mentioned firing three employees for consuming narcotics. All their outlets have a zero-drug, zero-alcohol policy. In the video, the Bengaluru-based entrepreneur said, “You cannot show up to work high on weed or alcohol.”

Abhijit Gupta also added that he doesn’t like terminating people, but to maintain standards and discipline, he had to. This incident highlights the strict work culture that the entrepreneur has enforced in his restaurants. While he values quality and customer satisfaction, he also ensures that his teams follow rules and remain disciplined.
