Good news for commuters in Bengaluru! A 7.5 km elevated section of the Pink Line Metro will start operations with five driverless trains by June 2026. The prototype was unveiled today, on December 11. Here’s everything to know about these upcoming trains that won’t even need a driver.
Bengaluru’s Pink Line Metro To Feature Driverless Trains
Bengaluru’s much-awaited Pink Line is set to begin operations by June 2026. According to a report by DNA India, a 7.5 km elevated stretch on this line will run with driverless-capable trains. The full 21 km corridor is expected to be ready by December 2026. Work is progressing steadily as the line moves towards its operational stage.
The first 7.5 km stretch will run from Kalena Agrahara to Tavarekere. This section will have trains that won’t require an onboard driver. Authorities unveiled the prototype today on December 11. After this, the train will undergo a series of safety and performance tests before heading to Kothanpur depot by mid-December.

Full Line To Be Operational By December 2026
Once the entire corridor is complete, the 21 km Pink Line will connect major areas like Dairy Circle and Nagawara. Authorities are aiming for December 2026 to make the full route operational. The final section will be serviced by 23 trainsets. Moreover, these trains will run every four and a half minutes during peak hours and every eight minutes during non-peak hours.
Authorities are planning daily operations from 5 am to midnight. Additionally, the Pink Line will use an advanced communication-based train control (CBTC) system. Trains will begin in semi-automated mode with drivers managing doors and emergency controls. The line will shift to full automation once all tests are completed. Authorities will make the transition only after passengers get used to the new technology. Overall, the slow and gradual approach will help ensure a smoother move to fully automated operations. Furthermore, all trainsets will undergo several rounds of testing to ensure they are fully ready for full-scale operations in 2026.
