The Indian Ministry of Tourism has announced that it is in the final stages of signing an official deal to bring the Michelin Guide to India. Here’s everything you need to know.
India May Soon Get Its First Michelin Guide!
During The New Indian Express’ Tourism Summit held in Chennai, Suman Billa, Additional Secretary and Director General, Ministry of Tourism, revealed that they are in the final stages of signing a deal to officially bring the Michelin Guide to India. The deal is expected to be signed by year-end, and this is big news for all restaurants in India.
According to Hindustan Times, after the deal is signed, Michelin will conduct a six-month audit across India. This globally recognised guide uses anonymous or secret inspectors to assess restaurants. If the food is outstanding, the restaurant is awarded one, two or three Michelin stars. The star is considered an ultimate badge of honour for food, and just one Michelin Star can make a restaurant globally famous overnight!

Criteria Behind The Michelin Stars
India has no Michelin Guide yet, but many Indian restaurants have earned stars overseas. According to Hindustan Times, the decision to bring it to India can be considered significant for India’s gastronomic scene and tourism.
According to Michelin Guide’s Wikipedia, the Michelin Guide started in France in 1900 by brothers Édouard and André Michelin. It was originally created as a guide for French motorists, but over time, it developed into an international reference for dining and travel. Here are the criteria for its restaurant rankings:
- One Michelin Star: A very good restaurant in its category.
- Two Michelin Stars: Excellent cooking, worth a detour.
- Three Michelin Stars: Exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey.
