In a significant move, Canadian authorities are planning mass cancellations of temporary visas. As per a report by India TV, the main targets include applicants from India and Bangladesh. This comes after Canada’s rejection rate for Indian student visas rose to 74% in August. It means that out of every four students, three were refused their chance to study in Canada.

Reportedly, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) have teamed up with US authorities to tackle this issue. They are now working together to not only detect but also cancel fraudulent visa applications. The agencies have formed a special working group to address such cases. The group is proposing new rules that would allow mass visa cancellations in emergencies. These emergencies may include pandemics, wars, or country-related issues. India and Bangladesh have been listed under “country-specific challenges” because of increasing fraudulent visa applications.

Part Of Canada’s Broader Immigration Plan

As per a report by Hindustan Times, this proposal is part of Canada’s broader immigration plan. By eliminating fraudulent visa holders, the government aims to strengthen its borders. Temporary visa holders include international students, workers, and visitors. The proposed measure also comes at a time when Ottawa is looking to reduce immigration, both temporary and permanent. The number of Indians in Ottawa, which was once high, has now dropped sharply.

According to a report by India TV, an additional verification process has also been introduced. Visa approvals have fallen from 63,000 in January 2024 to just 48,000 in June 2024. India, once a top source of Canada’s international students, now faces the highest refusal rate for study permits.

Though the proposal to allow mass cancellations of temporary visa holders is still being discussed, it remains to be seen what step the authorities will take next. But this new move means one thing. Indians could face tougher checks or even see their study visas cancelled for Canada.
