Chaos unfolded at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi on Friday morning as over 100 flights were delayed following an air traffic management glitch. Passengers were left stranded, and airlines like Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet scrambled to issue advisories.
More Than 100 Flights Delayed At Delhi Airport
According to Hindustan Times, flight operations at Delhi Airport were disrupted on Friday morning after a glitch in the Automatic Message Switching System (AMSS). AMSS is crucial as it supplies key flight data to the Air Traffic System (ATS). This technical snag resulted in major flight operation disruptions at the airport, with over 100 flights delayed.
The Delhi Airport is India’s busiest airport and manages more than 1,500 flights daily. According to Flightradar24, a flight tracking website, a little over 500 flights were delayed on Thursday and more than 100 since Friday morning at Delhi’s IGI Airport.
Furthermore, departure flight delays were up to 53 minutes. As per the Hindustan Times report, the issue started on Thursday afternoon, and the air traffic controllers were not able to receive flight plans automatically on their screens. They are now preparing flight plans manually with available data. This has resulted in slower operations and is adding to the Delhi Airport’s congestion.
Airlines Issue Travel Advisories
Keeping the flight delays at the Delhi Airport in mind, airlines like Air India, IndiGo, SpiceJet, Air India Express, and Akasa Air have issued travel advisories on their social media accounts.
“A technical issue with the ATC system in Delhi is impacting flight operations across all airlines, leading to delays and longer wait times at the airport and onboard aircraft. We regret the inconvenience caused by this unforeseen disruption, which is beyond our control, and appreciate your patience. Our cabin crew and on-ground staff at the airport are extending immediate assistance to reduce passenger inconvenience,” Air India announced on X.
“Please be assured that our crew and ground teams are actively assisting and doing their best to make your wait as smooth as possible. For the latest updates on your flight, we encourage you to check our website.” IndiGo further assured in their travel advisory on X.
